Asthma Peak Week: Why September Can Be The Toughest Time For Asthma

Asthma Peak Week: Why September is the Toughest Time for Asthma

Every year, doctors and researchers notice a sharp rise in asthma attacks during September. In fact, the third week of September is often called “Asthma Peak Week” because it’s the time when hospitalizations and emergency room visits for asthma skyrocket.

But why is this week so challenging for people with asthma? And what can you do to stay healthy during this critical time?

Why Does Asthma Peak in September?

Several factors come together to make September especially tough:

  • Back-to-School Germs: Kids are back in classrooms, which means more exposure to colds, flu, and viruses. Respiratory infections are one of the biggest asthma triggers.

  • Seasonal Allergies: Ragweed pollen, mold from fall leaves, and other allergens peak in early fall, irritating sensitive airways.

  • Weather Shifts: Cooler mornings, warmer afternoons, and sudden changes in temperature can all trigger asthma flare-ups.

  • Routine Changes: After the relaxed pace of summer, busy schedules and forgotten medications can add to the risk.

Tips to Protect Yourself During Asthma Peak Week

  • Stick to Your Asthma Action Plan – Take daily controller medication exactly as prescribed. Don’t skip doses, even if you’re feeling fine.

  • Get Ahead of Allergies – If you’re allergic to ragweed or mold, take antihistamines or other allergy medications before symptoms start.

  • Keep Rescue Inhaler Handy – Carry your quick-relief inhaler everywhere and make sure school nurses, teachers, or coworkers know about your asthma.

  • Wash Hands Often – Reduces the spread of germs that can trigger asthma attacks.

  • Schedule a Check-Up – Early fall is a great time to meet with one of our board-certified allergists to review your asthma control and update your action plan.

  • Get Your Flu Shot – Viruses can make asthma much worse, so staying protected is key.

Asthma Peak Week is a reminder that fall can be a challenging season for people with asthma. But with preparation and awareness, you can reduce your risks and breathe easier. Staying on top of medications, managing allergies, and protecting yourself from infections can make a big difference.
